James Luff

James studied music at Goldsmiths, followed by philosophy at UCL. He has also begun training to become a psychodynamic psychotherapist at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. Over the years, he has received private tuition and mentorship in composition from Kevin Volans, Walter Zimmermann, Laurence Crane and Matteo Fargion. His pieces have been played by a number of excellent musicians, including the London Chamber Orchestra, Anton Lukoszevieze, BLOCK4 recorder quartet, Eos Ensemble, Joe Qiu and James Oesi, among others.

James’ work as a composer often involves an interest in the way cyclical musical structures and logical processes can be layered and arranged, forming abstract compositions that involve both high-levels of repetition but also constant change.

With the composer Alex Nikiporenko, he runs 840 (eightforty.co.uk), a London-based concert series for new experimental and minimal music.
